Four Key Tips For Procrastinating, Last-Minute Packers

Posted on

You've read all of the advice columns and listened to your friends warn you for the last few months—you know you're supposed to have started packing weeks ago. Yet, your moving day is just around the corner and you have yet to put anything into a box. Take a deep breath, and try not to panic. You're not the only procrastinating packer out there! Here are some key tips to ensure you get everything packed away in time for your move without tearing your hair out.

Don't worry about sorting and donating.

If you had more time, it would be really nice to go through all of your belongings and get rid of things you no longer need. But you're in a time crunch now. Leave the sorting, donating, and tossing things out for later—once you're settled in your new home. For now, just focus on packing everything up. This will prevent you from having to deal with the mental fatigue that often comes from having to decide which items to keep, which is important when you're already stressed about moving.

Delegate tasks to willing helpers.

Find a few friends and family members who are willing to help you pack. Have them come over, and then assign them tasks. For instance, you could have one person pack up everything in the kitchen and another pack up your dresser drawers as you pack up items in the garage. Fight the urge to offer your helpers too much guidance—just let them complete the job in the way they see best fit. This will save you a lot of time!

Buy supplies if you have to.

Sure, it would be nice to spend a day driving around to various local businesses and collecting free boxes. But this would be a day better spent actually packing. Though free packing supplies are nice, paying a few dollars for some boxes and tape is not the end of the world and is probably the wisest choice when you're in a time crunch.

Don't pack it if it does not need packing.

Does that TV stand really need to be disassembled and put in a box, or can you just put it as-is into the moving truck? Maybe you could just leave everything inside your dressers instead of pulling items out just to put them in boxes. Before you pack anything, ask yourself, "does this really need to be packed?" This should lighten your workload considerably.
