Tying the Knot? Moving Tips to Make Two Households Intertwine With Ease
If you are engaged to be married, you are most likely very busy with wedding preparations for the big day. If you are currently living in a different location from your soon-to-be spouse, chances are you are soon going to be living together, whether in your home, their home, or a new home altogether. Regardless, someone (or both of you) will need to have belongings packaged and hauled to a new location. In the midst of wedding plans, this can be a bit stressful if you do not take steps in the organization of this event. Here are some tips you can use to make a move a bit easier for both of you.
Make a List Before Packing
It is a good idea for both partners to compile a list of the items they have within their home before a move takes place. In many instances, there will be two of each appliance or piece of furniture needed for a home. Once the lists are constructed, sit down with your partner to discuss which items have duplicates. You will then be able to decide which of each of these items is in better shape so you know which one will be used in your new home. The extra pieces can then be sold, given to a charity, or placed in storage. This will eliminate the need for packaging these items completely. Make sure to consider any wedding gifts you intend on receiving when making your lists.
Rent a Storage Unit
A storage unit can be reserved to hold items you feel you will not need in your new home right away. This will give you a chance to see how much you are able to fit inside your new home before deciding whether to add some of the items you have in your unit. Rent the unit well before your wedding date and slowly move items in as you deem them unneeded until after you are married. This will take away the temptation to give away items at the last minute, possibly causing you regret as a result. Make sure to rent the unit in a location near your new home so your spouse-to-be can also utilize the space.
Get Your Wedding Party Involved
Consider hosting a "packing party" at your home with your wedding party. This can be a great way to get your items packed up quickly, while enjoying yourselves at the same time. Encourage your spouse-to-be to host their own packing party if they have their own group of friends. Make sure to have plenty of boxes, bins, packing tape, packing peanuts, and labels on hand and designate each person to have a particular job in getting your belongings protected. This time can be spent discussing the upcoming wedding while taking care of the business of moving at the same time.
